We restored a 2021 Mazda MX-5 with benefit and important nuances of flood title
Cars from the USA marked as “flood” or “submerged” are lots that may scare a novice buyer. Indeed, such cars carry real risks, especially when it comes to registration in Poland. However, if approached correctly, as in our case with the 2021 Mazda MX-5, you can get an excellent vehicle at a favorable price.
We found a lot at an American auction: Mazda MX-5 2021, minimal mileage, excellent visual condition, but marked as flood. This means that the car does not start on the lot, and it has a recorded contact with water in the past.
❗️Important: a vehicle with a flood title is not always seriously damaged, but it is not eligible for insurance in the USA and may cause registration difficulties in Europe.
The Mazda MX-5 arrived in Poland by container. We prepared for the worst, but the car started immediately — without any interventions. Lucky? Yes, but it remains a client’s risk, and we always emphasize this in advance.
Here’s the main point to understand:
Registering a vehicle with a flood title in Poland is not guaranteed. Each voivodeship may approach this issue differently. Sometimes, translated documents and proof of technical condition suffice. But often, registries refuse registration, especially if the PTS explicitly states “flooding” as the reason for decommissioning. We always inform clients about this in advance. You buy a flood title at your own risk.
Despite the flood title, our client received a unique MX-5 in excellent condition, passed technical inspection and restoration with minimal investment — and saved up to 25–30% compared to the price of a similar model on the Polish market.
Answer: depends on your approach and team.
If you know what to look for, can assess risks, and work with professionals — it can be a great deal. But risks (including legal ones) must be understood and accepted in advance.
